Guinness World Records released a statement naming a Portuguese dog as the world’s oldest dog ever at 30 years, 266 days old. “Bobi is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, which is a breed of livestock guardian dog with an average life expectancy of 12-14 years,” and “He has lived his entire life with the Costa family in the rural village of Conqueiros, in Leiria, Portugal,” the statement said.
UPI reports that Bobi freely roams the farmland and forests near his owner’s home and is fed a diet of human food rather than standard dog food.
According to Guinness, Bobi beat out 23-year-old Spike, who had just been announced as the world’s oldest living dog earlier this year. His age was verified both by a 1992 registration from the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria and by the Portuguese pet database SIAC, according to UPI and Guinness.
